I like being a woman, even in a man’s world. After all, men can’t wear dresses, but we can wear the pants. Whitney Houston
Hello fellow Architects, we have been talking about a series of men’s essentials that should be in your closet and today’s item is not any less important.
Dress pants have been with us for a very long time, in fact, you might say it’s every cooperate man’s or woman’s best friend – with the jacket and dress shirt, of course. Pants bring together the entire outfit and you do not want to pick the wrong pants for the right shirt. This can destroy the entire outfit. Picking the right pair of pants is not so difficult and I will be glad to help you.
First, the waist. For every pair of trousers you have, the waist has to be the right size; it shouldn’t be too tight or too loose, it should be able to sit on your waist without a belt or suspenders. Basically, it has to be close to your perfect waist size.
Tip: Should be able to fit only 2 fingers in-between your body and your trousers.
I have seen so many people wear pants that are too tight, including myself. Yep, me. Don’t look at me like that. I have made my own mistakes and now I am experienced enough to tell you that not only does it suck, it is also painful and uncomfortable. I am also qualified enough to tell you how to fit your pants around your legs.
The rule to a perfect tapered trouser is simple. You want to be able to pinch about half of an inch on each side of the leg of your trouser, not more, not less, this way you know it’s not too big or too small.
Finally, the length. A very important piece to the puzzle. It will determine if you look sharp or lost in your clothing. For you to pull off the perfect outfit with the perfect pants, you have to choose the right length which is determined by your height. A short man should have his pants sit on top of his shoes or a little bit above his shoes, this is called “no break” (no folds). But, you have to be careful, you don’t want it to be too short. Most tall men should have their pants sit more on their shoes than above it, especially for the very tall men out there. This helps your body seem more proportional to the eyes. Depending on how tall you are, you can ask your tailor for; a half Break for the average tall man, or the full break for a much taller man. If this is gotten right, you will look dapper in those pants.
There is this misconception that you have to wear a belt with your trousers. Well, I can confidently say that that is total BS. I actually got in trouble in school because I didn’t wear belts. As you can see from my outfit, I am not wearing a belt. I love it because it gives a clean look. Belts just break your outfit up into segments, which is fine but is not always my style. You can also use suspenders instead, which give the same look.
For this look, I decided to pair my dress pants with a white dress shirt, a beige coat and let’s not forget my trusty brogues.
